Our workplace is filled with complex systems. Technology gives us greater capabilities as it becomes more and more integrated into our daily lives, but it can also make the tools that are supposed to assist us more difficult to use. This course will cover the tools and techniques that will enable us to more effectively build and manage complex systems. Following our familiarization with the two engineering specialties, systems engineering and human factors engineering, we will discover how combining the best practices from both disciplines can enhance the functionality of complex technological systems and human interface design.

Throughout the course, we will learn about the constraints of human cognition, usability, various interface design techniques, and the reasons behind use errors. Additionally, we will learn how to create a system requirements document and the responsibilities of a systems engineer. In addition to theoretical content, the course will include instances of design processes in action as they relate to diverse technological systems.
