Nanotechnology for Better Environment is a four-week online course that explores how nanotechnology and chemical engineering can help address some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges. Through four research-led modules taught by leading Technion faculty, students will learn about advanced membrane technologies for water purification and desalination, fuel-cell systems for sustainable energy, thermoelectric materials that convert waste heat into electricity, and catalytic processes that transform CO₂ and methane into valuable products. The course combines accessible scientific foundations with exposure to real-world applications and current research taking place at the Technion. Designed for motivated undergraduate students interested in sustainability, innovation, and emerging technologies, the program includes recorded lectures, interactive activities, and live discussions that connect nanoscale science with global environmental solutions

Dario R. Dekel

Dario R. Dekel received his BSc in Chemical Engineering from UTN (Argentina), MSc in Chemical Engineering, and PhD and MBA from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. In 1998 he joined Rafael Ltd., where he led 50 researchers in the area of High-Temperature Batteries. In 2007 Prof. Dekel co-founded CellEra (today HydroLite), where as VP for R&D he led 15 researchers to develop the Anion-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell technology. In 2015, after a 25-year career in industry, he returned to the Technion as a faculty member in the Wolfson Department of Chemical Engineering, where he heads the TEEM Lab (Technion Electrochemical Energy based on Membranes), leading the largest worldwide research group on AEMFCs and Anion-Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers (AEMWEs). Prof. Dekel holds >100 papers and >30patents on battery and fuel cell technologies. He was awarded >$6M government and company research grants from Israel, Europe, and USA. Since returning to the Technion, Prof. Dekel has been an active member of the Grand Technion Energy Program (GTEP). In April 2023, he was appointed as GTEP’s Director.

Gideon Grader

Gideon Grader is a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. His research includes the synthesis and processing of ceramics and hydrogen generation by water splitting. Recent work involves under-standing the formation mechanism of ceramic nanofibers with special architecture, including porous, hollow and ribbon morphologies. In the hydrogen space, he works on efficient, decoupled membrane-free electrochemical water splitting using auxiliary ceramic electrodes that allow separation of H2 and O2 evolution in time and space. He looks at ways to increase process performance by using large surface area, nanofiber electrodes. His work has been published in key journals including Nature Materials, Nature Energy and Advanced Functional materials. The new water splitting process has received the Horizon RSC prize (2022), the Israel Prime Minister Samson prize (2021) and the Shell New Energy Challenge prize (2020). Prof Gideon Grader founded and headed the Grand Technion Energy program (GTEP) 2007-2015, was a dean of the Chemical Engineering Department (2016-2019), and is a Co-Founder of H2Pro (2018).

Tamar Segal Peretz

Tamar Segal-Peretz is an Associate Professor at the Wolfson Department of Chemical Engineering at the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology. She received her PhD from the Technion, followed by a Director’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at Argonne National Laboratory and the Pritzker School for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. Tamar Segal-Peretz’s group, the Functional Nanostructure and Advanced Imaging (FNAI) lab, focuses on understanding and developing functional nanostructures for water technologies, sustainable plastics, and smart materials and by combining polymer nano-structuring and atomic layer deposition processes on, within, and of polymers. Tamar also currently serves as the Chair of the Israel Microscopy Society (ISM).

Oz Gazit

Professor Oz M. Gazit is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and the Technion Energy Program at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. He earned his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Ben-Gurion University (2004) and his Ph.D. from the Technion (2009). His research focuses on advanced functional materials, heterogeneous catalysis, and sustainable conversion of biomass, plastics, CO₂, natural gas, and waste streams into fuels and value-added chemicals. He has led and coordinated major research programs, including a 15.1 million NIS alternative fuels consortium (2025–2029), and has secured substantial national and international funding. Professor Gazit serves as Vice-Dean of Graduate Students in Chemical Engineering (since 2020), has authored more than 45 peer-reviewed publications, and holds multiple patents. He was recently awarded the Technion Commendation for Excellence in Teaching (2025).
