Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is the Israel’s leading research university.
With 20,000 students and over 4,000 faculty members in three campuses – in Be'er-Sheba, in Sde Boker and in Eilat - the University fulfills the vision of David Ben-Gurion, the first prime Minister of Israel, who predicted that the future of the country is in the Negev. The University provides the foundation for turning the city of Be'er Sheba to the national cyber center, where leading international companies rely on the University's expertise for innovative research and development.
Before celebrating her 50est birthday, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev continues to lead changes in the Negev, in Israel and around the world. The University operates both in research and in the community. Over one third of the students participate in unique social involvement programs, which are used as an example for other institutions in the world. The University is a leader in many research areas, including cyber security, robotics, biotechnology, desert agriculture, water research, Israel and Zionism Studies, Hebrew literature, hotel and tourism management, social leadership, nanotechnology and more. It encourages multi-disciplinary collaborations with academic institutions, national authorities, state institutions and leading companies in the industry, and cultivates entrepreneurship and innovation in many fields.
Adjusting the teaching to the 21st century is one of the challenges that the University deals with. With the perception that technological development affects teaching, the University invests in developing online courses, called the MOOC, in a variety of disciplines: humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, computer sciences and engineering. The University's online courses are very successful and count thousands of subscribers/students from all over Israel and the world.
